CHILDREN'S LITERACY PROJECT - Foundation | PURPOSE: Helping children learn to read. CURRENT SCOPE: Kiwanis volunteers spend one morning a week at each of two nearby elementary schools helping 2nd grade students with their reading skills. Volunteers are in the classroom with the teacher and students, and they spend most of their time listening to individual children practice reading aloud. In addition to the weekly reading sessions, there are three special days each school year. In the autumn every third grader at each school receives their own dictionary. In the spring there is a special Dr. Seuss Day, and at the end of the school year every 2nd grade student receives at least one free book of their own choosing. The elementary schools are in low income areas and English is often a second language. HOW TO HELP: We need volunteers to be reading assistants at the schools. If you love reading and enjoy children, this may be your cup of tea! Chuck (Terhune) says it is like being swamped by a herd of bunnies, but it is a LOT OF FUN! You can be a reading assistant one day a month ... or only certain times of the year; a weekly commitment is not required. We also need volunteers to help collect books to be given away at the end of the year. We collect both new and used books which are age appropriate for the children.
